I'm reading...Anne Perry

THE CATER STREET HANGMAN

I'd heard Anne Perry's name mentioned over the years as an author to try, and I would have tried her work sooner if I'd known quite how wonderful it was!

This is the first of the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt stories - which give a little away as in this book Thomas and Charlotte first meet ;).

Great murder mystery, fabulously unique characters, gorgeous setting in Victorian London, and an extremely dry wit.  There is both a lightness of touch and a depth of style in this book.

It was first released in 1979 and you wouldn't know it for a second.  Delightful, exciting, and just great reading.  Adored it and I can assure you I'll be back for more!

THE BLURB:

While the Ellisons were out paying calls and drinking tea like proper Victorian ladies, a maid in their household was one of a number of young women garrotted to death.  Inspector Thomas Pitt investigates the scene and finds that no one is above suspicion.  As his intense questioning causes many a composed facade to crumble, Pitt finds himself drawn to the independently minded Charlotte Ellison.  Yet a romance between a society girl and so unsuitable a suitor was impossible in the midst of a murder investigation....

I'm reading...Robin Covington

A NIGHT OF SOUTHERN COMFORT

First - the title. It just sizzles right off the bat.  Dive into the book and it does not disappoint.

With a single title feel and situation - small town cop protecting the Governor's daughter - the heroine is layered and strong, the hero gorgeous and damaged...and all man.  This story gets five flames on the heat scale.  Phew!  It should honestly come with a fan.

The fact that this is a first book blows my mind.  From the opening moment til the last it's so accomplished a story.  Richly detailed, full, exciting, and sexy.  Every time I had to put it down - a girl has to sleep, stock the fridge, feed her kids etc. - I did so with a whimper.

Add to that the fact that there are a handful of the hero's besties out there getting their own stories written and Robin Covington with A Night of Southern Comfort has made me one happy reader!

THE BLURB:

One night of passion...

Detective Jackson Cantrell never imagined that one night with an irresistible stranger would turn his life upside down. He’s spent years living in the shadows, but Dr. Michaela Roarke awakened a passion inside him he'd buried years ago.

He never expected the woman would turn out to be the governor's daughter...and his next assignment. The governor blackmails Jackson to secretly watch over Michaela and protect her from a stalker, or kiss his dream job at the FBI good-bye. Swearing to keep things strictly professional, Jackson moves in with Michaela. Too bad his heart can't keep the same promise.

But when the stalker's attacks quickly escalate beyond mere photographs to bodily harm, Jackson must race to save Michaela's life. And he’ll have to figure out how to keep her once she discovers his lie.

I'm reading...barbara hannay

ZOE'S MUSTER

I love Barbara Hannay's stuff. No wonder; she's a multiple RITA nominee, a RITA winner, and an all around gorgeous lady.  And add to all that she writes the most warm, rich, evocative, delightful books!  Her Playboy Challenge is still one of my all-time fave Mills and Boon books EVER.  So when her first single title novel - the outback romance ZOE'S MUSTER hit the shelves, I grabbed a copy quick smart!

Zoe is just gorgeous.  Stuck between a rock and a hard place when she discovers her father is not her father, she promises her devastated mother she won't tell a soul.  And yet she goes off in secret search of her real dad, a North Queensland cattleman.  The hero, Mac, lives on a neighbouring property, and the man is just heavenly - beautiful, damaged, and with that long and loose with the lazy strides of any good 'cowboy'.  Every time he came onto the page the excitement level just lifts.

With multiple stories drawing you through Zoe's journey you'll be thoroughly entertained by this one.  It's warm, gentle, romantic, with a good dose of the rugged Aussie outback.

THE BLURB:

Three women … two families … one secret …

When Zoe, restless black sheep of the Porter family, discovers that her biological father is a North Queensland cattleman, Peter Fairburn, her deep desire to meet him takes her from inner city Brisbane to a job as a stockcamp cook.

Zoe’s mother, Claire, is wrestling with guilt and shock over Zoe’s discovery. She swears Zoe to secrecy, fearing that the truth could ruin the career of her high profile politician husband. When she is forced to confront her past, Claire also reassesses her marriage.

Virginia Fairburn is happily married to Peter, but she’s always lived with the shadow of the other woman her husband loved and lost.

On the muster at Mullinjim, Zoe meets brooding cattleman Mac McKinnon, who knows from painful experience that city girls can’t cope in the bush. Every instinct tells Mac that Zoe is hiding something. As the pressure to reveal her mother’s secret builds, Zoe fears she must confide in him or burst.

The truth has the potential to destroy two families. Or can it clear the way for new beginnings?

I'm reading...Fiona Lowe

BOOMERANG BRIDE

About time too!  I love love love Fiona Lowe's work.  She writes Medicals for Harlequin Mills and Boon and they are exactly as I like 'em; warm, deep, rich with texture, evocative with scenery, romantic and real.

What with Fiona being in Anaheim right now, and this book being up for the prestigious RITA Award for Best Contemporary Single Title romance, I couldn't wait a second longer!

BOOMERANG BRIDE is her first longer book and its just as glorious as everything of hers I've read!  Set in a deep Wisconsin winter rather than her usual small town Australia, it still has the same warmth, a cast of unique and wonderful characters, a heroine with warmth and guts, and a hero to fall smack bang in love with.

The clash of Australianisms and Americanisms was hilarious, as I remember having those exact same conversations on my trips to the US!

THE BLURB:

Matilda Geoffrey risked it all for love. She left Australia to be with Barry—the man who had swept her off her virtual feet. Now, wearing a wedding dress, she's alone on Main Street in small-town Wisconsin, and things aren't working out exactly as planned…

In town for his annual family visit, Marc Olsen had never seen a bride quite like Matilda—staring into a storefront window, holding a tottering wedding cake, and looking desperately in need of a groom. He may not have any warm feelings for his hometown, but meeting Matilda just as she discovers she's been scammed by her online "fiancé" stirs something in him.

Matilda is not the kind of woman Marc imagined himself with, and Marc is anything but the romantic hero that Matilda has always dreamed of. But as unlikely circumstances throw them together, can they let go of their misconceptions and risk their hearts for love?

I'm reading...Sarah Mayberry

HER BEST WORST MISTAKE

My heading ought to be I'm reading...Sarah Mayberry...again!  Along with Rachel Gibson, Sarah is my go to girl right now.  I'm blissfully ploughing through her glorious backlist and gleefully snuggling up with her front list as they come along.

HER BEST WORST MISTAKE is Sarah's first self-published book but it is a companion piece to her Harlequin Blaze, HOT ISLAND NIGHTS from a few years back.  As luck would have it I'd read that first book when it came out, so the leads in this were familiar, but honestly you don't need to have read the former to absolutely fall in and crazy love with the current.

Did I love it?  Oh my god, did I ever!!!  This book is unique, sexy, warm, rich, contextual, with two supremely excellent characters.  Martin is stuffy, complete with leather elbow patches on his cardigans.  I mean, come on, how can a guy like that be a modern romantic lead?  The heroine, Violet, likes herself short skirts, fishnets and animal prints who, in one of her lesser moments flashes out hero while blowing a raspberry. And by god they're just heaven!

Buy it, buy it, BUY IT!  Read it, love it, want more Sarah books.  That's about the extent of it.  I promise.

THE BLURB:

She thinks he's stuffy. He thinks she's spoilt.  Then the gloves come off and so do their clothes!

For six years Violet Sutcliffe has known that Martin St Clair is the wrong man for her best friend. He's stuffy, old before his time, conservative. He drives Violet nuts - and the feeling is entirely mutual. Then, out of nowhere, her friend walks out just weeks before her wedding to Martin, flying to Australia on a mission of self-discovery. Back in London, Violet finds herself feeling sorry for suddenly-single Martin. At least, she tells herself it's pity she feels. Then he comes calling one dark, stormy night and they discover that beneath their mutual dislike there lies a fiery sexual chemistry.

It's crazy and all-consuming - and utterly wrong. Because not only are they chalk and cheese, oil and water, but Martin once belonged to her best friend. A friend Violet is terrified of losing. What future can there be for a relationship with so many strikes against it?

Sarah says: "This book is a spin off from my Blaze novel, Hot Island Nights. Both stories can be read in isolation and still make perfect sense, but I hope that together they form a neat little duo."

THE HUNGER GAMES

I'm a total sucker for a movie tie in and along with the awesome reviews I'd heard about Suzanne Collins' THE HUNGER GAMES series, I had to read it.  Am I glad I did?  Hell yeah!

THE HUNGER GAMES, along with the follow up books CATCHING FIRE and  MOCKINGJAY are exactly the kinds of books I loooved reading as a young teenager.  Dystopian stories with strong kid heroes.  Tough stuff, and I loved it.  Still do.  John Wyndham, John Christopher.  Ray Bradbury.  In fact John Christopher's THE SWORD OF THE SPIRITS trilogy is still my favourite story ever.  My so's middle name is named after the hero of those books which tells you how much it meant to me.

But back to THE HUNGER GAMES!  It's rich, intricate, moving, tough, unique, terrifying, and completely unputdownable - yes that's a word.  Just check out Suzanne Collins' website where authors such as Stephen King and Stephenie Meyer talk about how they simply could not stop reading til they were done.

Add a love triangle at its heart and I'm done ;).

THE BLURB:

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. But Katniss has been close to death before - and survival, for her, is second nature.

I'm reading...Rachel Gibson

Simply IrresistibleSIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE

This is the first in Rachel's Chinooks Hockey series, and my first ever Rachel Gibson.  She's one of those names that have been on my radar for ages as someone I'd love to try, I just never found the chance.  And now I'm soooo glad I finally tucked one into my shopping trolley as I enjoyed Simply Irresistible to absolute bits.

The blurb:

Georgeanne Howard, charm school graduate and Southern belle extraordinaire, leaves her fiancé at the altar when she realizes she just can't marry a man old enough to be her grandfather, no matter how rich he is. John Kowalsky unknowingly helps her escape, and only when it's too late does he realize that he's absconded with his boss's bride. At the height of his hockey career, this bad boy isn't looking to be anybody's savior but his own, no matter how beautiful this angel may be. But a long night stretches ahead of them--a night too sultry to resist temptation.
When Georgeanne and John meet again, she is on her way to becoming Seattle's domestic darling and he is past his hellraising days. But he is shocked to learn that their single unforgettable night in paradise produced a daughter, and he is determined to be part of her life. Georgeanne has loved John since the moment she jumped into his little red Corvette seven years ago, but she doesn't want to risk her heart again. Is he really a changed man? And will he risk the wrath of his boss, and one final chance at glory, to prove that this time his love will be everlasting?

The hero John, is hot hot hot.  And damaged.  And real.  Georgeanne's past is heartbreaking, and gives her an edge, a vulnerability and a strength that lifts her a level above your usual heroine.  The fact that there's a whole slew of Chinooks hockey players in need of good women to tame them is even better news!  Add an adorable kid, a cast of sidekicks and Simply Irresistible is funny, warm, heart-tugging fun.  As for the rest of the Chinooks hockey series?  I devoured them in like a week flat!  The sixth and latest has just arrived and I'm salivating to see what happens next!

THE SUMMER OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY

There was no way I was waiting long before diving into The Summer of Living Dangerously.  I love, love, loved Julie's last book, GETTING AWAY WITH IT.  I devoured the earlier book in two days.  My family barely saw me ;).

The blurb:

An ordinary woman. An extraordinary adventure.
Alice Woodstock has been running away.  Well, not literally. She spends most of her time glued to her desk, writing about grommets and model aeroplanes. No, Alice is avoiding the real world because there’s something—someone—in her past that she’s desperate to forget. So when she’s commissioned to write about life in stately home Eversley Hall, she jumps at the chance to escape into Regency England, even if it does mean swapping her comfy T-shirt for an itchy corset. Perhaps she’ll meet her own Mr Darcy…  But when her past resurfaces in the shape of Leo Allingham, Alice is brought down to earth with a bump. Reckless, unpredictable Leo reminds Alice of the painful price of following her heart. And the new Alice doesn’t live dangerously.  Or does she?

I was honestly torn between Alice's two possible loves.  The lovely, wealthy, handsome Darcy-esque squire, or the lean, mean, reckless, wholly screwed-up ex who hurt her sooo bad.  The fact that Julie manages to keep the reader on such tenterhooks throughout, hurting when Alice hurts, not wanting to forgive when Alice refuses to forgive, hoping for the rosier version of a future, even while making her story with Leo so real, is a testament to her talent.

I laughed.  The daily rainbow is hilarious!   And I bawled.  Til I could scarce breathe.

So grab yourself a couch, a blanket, a cup of hot chocolate, a spare day, and a box of tissues and dive into THE SUMMER OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY .  You'll thank me.

THE MARRIAGE BARGAIN

Jennifer Probst is the big success story with the newly launched Indulgence category romance line from Entangled Publishing.  You can read all about her debut novel's awesome release here.

I loved the excerpt I'd read of the book, so grabbed a copy. (Aussies without Kindles, who can't buy through B&N who only seem to accept American credit cards, even on ebooks!, grab it at Books on Board)

Anyhoo, what a ripper book it was!

THE MARRIAGE BARGAIN has a super strong heroine, a lovely upright hero with a touch of the clueless that always makes this reader happy, and is just jam packed with warm, believable story.

MELT

Natalie Anderson is a perennial reader favourite who writes for RIVA and Harlequin Presents Extra, like me!  She’s also written a novella called MELT.

For a girl who always writes long and has to cut back a ridiculous amount – me! - to see a story with half the amount of words I usually write, written so tight, so rich, so full of context and romance, and heat was amazing.  I love love loved this story.

The setting, a base in Antarctica, was a third hero for me.  The detail Nat invoked was phenomenal.   What an astonishing place.  I found myself jealous that Hunter and Emma were some of the lucky few who get to experience it!

Now Hunter.  There's a hero.  Gorgeous, hotter than hot, and fun.  Emma, shyer, softer, with nicely unexpected sass, was a great foil.  Together they pack some fabulous sexual tension.

This was one of those stories that made me snatch every minute I could to drink it up.   I made the mistake of reading it while dying my hair.  I had a five minute window.  I took fifteen!  Happy ending, my hair did not fall out, though it might be a tad more vibrant than usual this month ;).

MELT is a flirty, sassy, fun, warm read.  And don't even get me started on the cover.  LOVE!

I'm reading...nicola marsh

Nicola and I sold our first books within a couple of months of one another.  Met.  Found out we lived about 20 minutes apart!  It was soooo lovely for a first time author to find someone going through the exact same deal living so close.

A happy coincidence I love reading her books too.  They’re so fast, so fluid, so harmonious, that I’ve always said they feel like she sat down one day and wrote from the first word til the last.  And when I know how I piece a book together over many months, to read a story that feels that way is just such a pleasure.

So needless to say when she sold her first single title I was so so excited!  And now I’ve read the thing I’m even more so.  The colour, light, life, va va voom in this book is constant.  Like a Bollywood movie itself!  And the food.  My god the food.  If you have a thing for Indian food, even a tiny little undernourished thing, then this book will send you over the edge.  I'd go so far as to say wear a bib when reading this book.  It's a hazard if you're reading it on an e-reader!

With a multitude of gorgeous, vibrant, distinctive characters within a classic chick-lit framework, BUSTED IN BOLLYWOOD is fun, fresh, and fabulous from the first word til the last.

SHADOW KIN

I’ve known MJ Scott for years.  A fellow Melbournite we’d meet up at writers’ conferences, and even bumped into one another at the shops on occasion!  She finalled in so many unpublished writers comps it was only a matter of time before some lucky publisher grabbed her.

SHADOW KIN is the first novel in the Half-Light City series, and it’s a ripper!  I’ve been struggling with how to describe this book in a way that does it justice.  I read it in a gulp, which shows how much I loved it.  Why?   For a start there was such clarity and surety and in the writing.  I felt like I was in good hands.  It’s a story of a woman, a wraith, who has lived a life of darkness, and servitude, bound to a Blood (a vampire) in a most unsavoury way, and yet the flavor is so beautifully light.  Tenuous.  Diaphanous.  Like the whole balance of the heroine’s journey could fracture at any second.  The setting, against a steam punk background, is complimentary yet subtle.   The bad guys comfortingly recognizable yet unique.  The hero and heroine both inventive yet true.

SHADOW KIN is great adventure of a story, with beautiful nuance and light and shade (true, but also hee hee if you’ve read the book) with at its centre a romance with heart and hurt and wariness and desperation and hope.  It’s a story that will grab you by the shirtfront and tug you through the Half-Light City.

Thank goodness the second book of the series, BLOOD KIN is out in a few months.  Can’t come soon enough for me!!!!

I'm reading...Anne Gracie

BRIDE BY MISTAKE

You simply can't go wrong with an Anne Gracie book. It's literally impossible.  There aren't many authors I'd pre-order a hundred days in advance, but she is one of them. That way, when it turns up on my doorstep a few months later it's a blissful surprise!

Bride by Mistake is the 5th book in her Devil Riders series, but you could read them out of order no worries.  (If you want to start at number one, grab The Stolen Princess here)  This one's about Luke, the daredevil who came back from the war in Spain a changed man.  A man with a secret wife as well!  After saving Isabella on the roadside from the hands of terrible men, he married her in order to keep her from the clutches of her cousin who had every intention of marrying her himself in order to get his hands on her late mother's fortune.  The chance of him surviving the war were so slim after all...

Yet he survived.  And came back for her.  And there the romance really begins.

Bride by Mistake is shiny, gorgeous, and heartwarming, with loads of fabulous secondary characters and superb lashings of wonderful historical context - much like every book Anne Gracie has ever penned!  I love love love her stuff.  did I mention that already?  If not, I'll say it again.  LOVE!  Now go buy every book she's ever written, take a month of sickies, live on your couch with a blankie and a hot chocolate and enjoy ;).

I"m reading...Victoria Dahl

GOOD GIRLS DON'T, BAD BOYS DO,  and REAL MEN WILL

I first found Victoria Dahl on twitter.  Don't let the sweet picture fool you.  The girl's funny.  And sharp.  And raw.  And I figured if she could give us all that in 140 characters I had to see what she could do with a whole book!

I started with Good Girls Don't, liking the fact there were two more books already out there in the world about the same family if I enjoyed the first.  Needless to say I ordered the  next two when I was about a chapter in!

All three books are warm, seriously sexy, and real, with great emotional tension and perfect dollops of levity.  And of the three I most wish I'd written the middle story, Bad Boys Do.

Bartender Jamie is a scorching hero - my word can the man wear a kilt! - who also makes your heart just break.  Whole Olivia, with her button up cardigans and stifled dreams is his perfect foil.  I've read me a lot of romance novels but I had a point where I honestly thought they might not make it!  That takes some story weaving skill.

I'm Reading... Sophie Kinsella

CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET?

The first Shopaholic book - Confessions of a Shopaholic - had me in stitches.  I'd be reading in bed at all hours and wake my poor sleeping husband with a snort or a bark or a raucous guffaw.  Because it's so...damn...funny.  Twenties Girl is just as good, and perhaps even stronger.

With CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET?, she just keeps on being ridiculously heavenly wonderful!  As she does so beautifully well here she weaves a lovely romance between a regular girl and a fantasy hero in a way that's completely believable while being just a little nutty.  Throw in a good dollop of family issues, winsome and odd friends, a smattering of true to life workmates and the story has a rich context that makes the story as much about the girl finding herself as the girl finding the one.  And did I mention its funny?  IT'S BLOODY HILARIOUS!

Can You Keep a Secret? is warm, lovable, clever, and laugh out loud funny, just like anything Sophie Kinsella writes, methinks.  Keeper?  Wish I'd written it?  You bet!

I'm reading... Nora Roberts

THE NEXT ALWAYS

I read my first official Nora Roberts book only a couple of months back after my mum shoved the first of the Bride Quartet into my hands and said "Read them now!"  Loved them to pieces.  Lovely, warm, inclusive reads. (She'd loaned them from the library.  Needless to say she got the box set for Christmas ;).)

So the minute The Next Always - the first in her new Inn Boonsboro trilogy -- came out, I pounced.  As before it was a warm romantic read, though I have to say I warmed to the Bride girls a little more.  Deeper conflict perhaps?

A little bit of trivia on this one for ya!  The books are set in Robert's home town and take place inside places close to her heart some of which she even owns in real life!  There is even a very sneaky reference to Eve and Roarke, written by Nora's alter ego JD Robb.  Cheeky ;).

THE NEXT ALWAYS by Nora Roberts is warm and friendly with a slew of lovely characters to whom you can't wait to see what happens next!

EXPLOSIVE EIGHTEEN

I've read 'em all, all the way from One For the Money - are you hanging for the film as much as I am??? -  to this, the eigtheenth installment in the Stephanie Plum, Morelli, Ranger triangle.  Because, come on, the books are ridiculously fun, the ever-expanding cast of characters utterly crazy, and the tone an absolute delight, but it's the "who the heck will she end up with?' that keeps you coming back and back and back.

It's one of those series you can glom like crazy, but after a while its great to take a break.  I've read the alst three in quick succession, and I tell ya, I loved this one.  It felt fresh.  Sharp.  The Ranger-Morelli thing had a bit more teeth.

Zany, quick, and and unexpectedly gritty EXPLOSIVE EIGHTEEN by Janet Evanovich is classic Plum novel with a touch of edge that I thoroughly enjoyed.
